A Design Guide to Mobile Ad Images and Videos

How to achieve the best results with single-image, multi-image, and video ads.

Images and Videos

In previous articles, we’ve shared best practices for creating mobile ad images and videos that catch consumers’ attention and inspire them to act.

To achieve optimal results from your single-image, multi-image, and video ads, it’s also important to know and follow the mobile platform’s image and video design requirements. See below for recommended design guidelines for achieving the best results on Facebook.

Single-Image Ads
  • File type: jpg or png
  • Ratio: 1.91 : 1
  • Size: at least 1,200 x 628 pixels
  • Text: Images that consist of more than 20 percent text may experience reduced delivery. Upload your image to Facebook’s Image Text Check to determine how your ad may perform based on the amount of text in the image.
Multi-Image Ads
  • Minimum number of images: 2
  • Maximum number of images: 10
  • File type: jpg or png
  • Ratio: 1:1
  • Recommended image size: at least 1,080 x 1,080 pixels
  • Text: Images that consist of more than 20 percent text may experience reduced delivery. Upload your image to Facebook’s Image Text Check to determine how your ad may perform based on the amount of text in the image.
Video Ads
  • File type: Although most file types are supported, .MP4 or .MOV files are ideal
  • Aspect ratio: 9:16 to 16:9 (View a chart of the different aspect ratios and requirements across ad placements.)
  • Recommended resolution: Upload the highest resolution video available that meets file size and ratio limits
  • File size: 4 GB max
  • Length minimum: 1 second
  • Length maximum: 240 minutes
  • Captions: Optional but recommended
  • Sound: Optional but recommended
  • Thumbnail image ratio: Should match the aspect ratio of your video
  • Thumbnail images that consist of more than 20 percent text may experience reduced delivery. Upload your thumbnail image to Facebook’s Image Text Check to determine how your ad may perform based on the amount of text in the image.
  • Vertical videos (with aspect ratio taller than 2:3) may be cropped to 2:3

Whether launching an image- or video-based ad, one of the most important steps is to test different variables, such as visual elements and aspect ratios that fit within the design requirements, to see what performs best for your audience.
